THE Story

8 East Huron is a luxury rental project on the edge of the River North neighborhood of Chicago developed by CA Ventures/ CA Residential. The vision of the project was to create a sleek glass building with boutique rental units, style, atmosphere and amenities worthy of the modern idea of luxury. To compete amongst larger Chicago residences, the building included a number of attractive amenities for tenants from an outdoor swimming pool and grilling station to a fully-integrated demonstration kitchen and community dining area.

Chicago Art Source was contracted to handle art curation and installation for the entire building encompassing the public spaces, corridors, resident amenity spaces, as well as one of the residences. The art program was a crucial element of selling the modern, luxury experience to prospective tenants.

On the ground level, a sculptural moment greets residents with Matt Devine’s Edward steel. The elevator corridor offers a moment of whimsy with David Knoll’s Koi and Blue & White Vaseoil on linen – a modern, artistic take on a classic aquarium while you wait for the elevator. He paints personal refuges in the form of still lives and imagined landscapes - places to visit for solace, meditation and sanctuary. Intuitively he creates a connection between the viewer and the power of place, the web of life, the idea of nature itself. Thematically the interest is in the interaction between man – and manmade objects – and nature. In a painted still life these ideas collapse on each other.

In the communal spaces, sculptural pieces such as Claire McCardle’s Persephone and a piece by Joel Urrity add interest to the space. In the private residence, the drama is anchored with a massive Juame Plensa sculpture that took five people with a specially designed lift to install. On the walls, an eclectic and elegant mix of pieces from James Nares’ I’m Blue screen print to Alex Katz’s Beach Scene Ada oil on linen completes the space.

We approached the project with a dedication to bringing in art that was current, yet timeless. Sophisticated, yet cutting-edge. Luxurious, yet with a touch of whimsy. And ultimately to ensure that every piece, from paintings and prints to small and large-scale sculptural pieces, were complementing the stunning views, sleek aesthetic and high-end finishes.
