“The word 'tempest' is scribbled on my studio wall. It's a reminder to reframe obstacles into opportunities, despair into direction and fear into faith; all to align with the paint. My work is about surmounting the tempest, diving into the deep waters of a blank canvas, embracing the elements, pushing forward and ultimately finding beauty. “
The artist’s process is as important as the work itself. Through layers of accrued oil paint, windows into other worlds are delicately and gradually created. These windows are intended to engage the imagination and lead to a new and unexplored part of the self. Subjects are left open-ended intentionally to incorporate the viewer into the visual experience. The magic behind the work is its dialogue with the viewer.
Originally from Kansas City, Missouri, Michelle Gordon became mesmerized by the world of art at a young age. After being accepted to the Ecole des Beaux-Art in Avignon, France, Gordon definitively made the choice not to study art formally and instead earned a Master's degree in literature and foreign language from the University of Oregon and the Sorbonne University. Painting all the while, in 2003 her first show sold out and marked the beginning of her professional career as an artist. Currently based in Chicago, Gordon's work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally.
